Legal regulations on the safe application of fertilisers

The most important rules for the application of fertilisers under the existing legislation

  • Only fertilisers that have been admitted to trading under Act on fertilisers and fertilisation, the provisions of Regulation No. 2003/2003, as well as natural fertilisers shall be applied.
  • An annual dose of a natural fertiliser shall not exceed 170 kg of nitrogen (N) in pure component per 1 ha of agricultural land.
  • When determining doses of fertilisers, the nutritional requirements of plants and soil richness in nutrients shall be taken into account.
  • Fertilisers shall be applied uniformly over the entire surface of the field in a way preventing fertilisation of fields and crops not intended for that.
  • Natural and organic fertilisers in solid and liquid form shall be applied between 1 March and 30 November (not applicable to fertilisers applied under cover).
  • Natural and organic fertilisers in liquid form shall be applied with in-soil applicators, by sprinkling machines or a liquid manure spreader truck equipped with splash plates or spreading hoses.
  • Natural fertilisers should be covered or mixed with soil, no later than on the day following their application (not applicable to fertilisers applied in forests and on grassland).
  • Natural and organic fertilisers in solid form may be applied during the growing season of plants (for top dressing) only on grassland and perennial field crops not intended for direct human consumption.
  • Fertilisers (excluding slurry) shall be applied on agricultural land at least 5 meters away from the shore of lakes and reservoirs with an area of 50 hectares, watercourses, ditches (excluding ditches with a width of up to 5 m, calculated at the upper edge of a shore and a ditch), channels.
  • Fertilisers shall be applied on agricultural land at least 20 meters away from the shore of lakes and reservoirs with an area of 50 hectares, water intake protection zones and coastal areas.
  • Slurry shall be applied on agricultural land at least 10 meters away from the shore of lakes and reservoirs with an area of over 50 hectares, watercourses, ditches excluding ditches with a width of up to 5 m, and channels.
  • Fertilisers shall not be applied on flooded soil or soil covered with snow or frozen to a depth of 30 cm, and during rainfall.
  • Natural fertilisers in liquid form and nitrogen fertilisers shall not be applied on soil with no plant cover, on slopes greater than 10% and during the growing season of plants intended for direct human consumption.
  • Urine and slurry shall be stored only in sealed tanks with a capacity allowing for the collection of at least 4-month production of these fertilisers, in closed tanks or on impermeable plates protected against the infiltration of leachate into the ground.
