Prof. Apoloniusz Berbec
Professor in IUNG-PIB, over 35 years experience in the
field of plant breeding as regard resistance to viral
and fungal diseases, studies on cytoplasmic male sterility
in plants, application of cytological methods in studies
on phylogenetic relationship of selected species. Awarded
the CORESTA Study Grant for obtaining germplasm resistant
to TSWV. Participant of international and national scientific
courses, trainings and conferences (USA, Japan, China,
South Africa, Germany). Author of many new cultivars resistant
to Thielaviopsis basicola. He cooperates with numerous
scientific centres in the world in the range of plant
breeding and genetics. Assistant editor of Scientific
Journal of Food Agriculture and Environment. Member of
European Association For Tobacco Research and Experimentation
(AERET). Author and co-author of over 150 scientific publications.

Scientist in IUNG-PIB. The head of the Department of
Plant Breeding and Biotechnology. About 25 years experience in breeding
of plants resistant to viral and fungal diseases, maintenance

resistance to Peronospora humuli, chemical analyses of
selected secondary metabolites (alkaloids, resins and

analysis of mitosis, meiosis and pollen viability, application
of tissue culture methods in obtaining haploids and doubled
haploids, assessment of effectiveness of plant protection
agents. Participant of international and national scientific
courses, trainings and conferences. Member of European
Association For Tobacco Research and Experimentation (AERET).

biotechnology, studies of transgenic crops, molecular
analyses of transgen presence and estimating number of
their copies in transgenic plants (PCR reaction, real-
time PCR), tissue culture methods (obtaining secondary
metabolites on solidified media and in suspension culture,
obtaining haploids and double haploids, eliminating a
viroid from hop plants by meristem tip culture), diagnosis
of viral diseases with serological and biological tests,
cytological analyses of plant material. Participant of
international and national scientific courses, trainings
(among other things in Experimental Institute of Floriculture,
Sanremo, Italy) and conferences. Participant in European
project NUTRA-SNACKS concerning in vitro production of

Assistant researcher in IUNG-PIB since 2004. Experience
in plant biotechnology and techniques of molecular biology
( RFLP, DNA hybridization, RT PCR) studies on Potato Virus
Y (PVY) and resistance to fungal diseases. Participant
in project on obtaining hop plants free of viruses and
latent viroid by meristem tip culture. Awarded the CORESTA
Study Grant for his research project on biological, serological
and molecular characterization of PVY strains in the world.

trainings and conferences. Principal investigator in some
